"The Esplanade is a musical image of the St. Kilda Esplanade on a windy winter day in the middle of August."

Music Notes

Passacaglia

Passacaglia is a piece that was originally written for a woodwind chamber ensemble to perform at a friend’s wedding. This original composition has been adapted for a smaller concert band or small wind ensemble, with the intent to be a stately waltz/dance.

The Phoenix

The inspiration, and title, of this work is derived from the mythical phoenix. The phoenix is a bird with colourful plumage and a golden tail. There are many variants on the colours depending on the legend, which include scarlet, purple, blue, and green. According to the legends, the phoenix's cry is a beautiful song. The legends also tell how the phoenix builds itself a nest towards the end of its life. At the end of its life cycle, the phoenix and its nest burn away until both are reduced to ashes. From the ashes, the phoenix is reborn.

Rhapsody for Wind Band

"Rhapsody for Wind Band is a programmatic piece that explores the philosophical concept of Cartesian Dualism, which was made famous by the French philosopher Rene Descartes. The concept of Cartesian Dualism debates whether the mind can exist without a body, and whether the body can exist without a mind."

Symphony No. 2 - Boat Symphony

Boat Symphony is my second symphony for concert band. Initially inspired by a maritime festival, I decided to write some music that would seem best suited for such an event. After initially writing the Seafarers March and Maiden Voyage, I decided to expand the idea out to a full symphony based loosely on maritime mythology and themes.

Valhalla

The concert band version of Valhalla, which was originally written for brass band.

Valhalla is a composition that was inspired by Norse mythology, particularly their beliefs and ideas on death and the afterlife. The word ‘Valhalla’ itself translates into English as “hall of the fallen”. It is where Odin sends those who he deems worthy to reside with him in the afterlife. The composition explores the warrior’s journey to the afterlife, and has been inspired by representations of Norse mythology in pop culture in films such as Erik the Viking and the Thor films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe
